Suggestions For Week of 12/25-12/31

There are a number of really good shows and performers this week. Some are sold out like Primus at the Fox Theatre in Oakland. Here are some suggestions of shows that you may want to check out.

Tuesday December 26th

Ashkenaz 1317 San Pablo Ave, Berkeley 8:30 PM-11 PM Showtimes Andrew Carriere Zydeco Nation Andrew Carrierre & and the Zydeco Cajun Allstars This is of the Bay area’s premiere Zydeco Cajun bands. . A native of Southern Louisiana, accordionist and singer Andrew Carriere brings a long family tradition into his playing. His father was the legendary Creole fiddler “Bebe” Carriere, his uncle was accordionist Eraste Carriere, and his cousin is the great Chubby Carriere. They are really fun. $12 Cover Charge

Le Colonial 20 Cosmo Pl, San Francisco 7pm-10 showtime Le Jazz Hot Le Jazz Hot Live This is a great ensemble of accomplished and versatile musicians celebrating the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli.’ N/C

Pier 23 The Embarcadero, San Francisco 5pm-8PM Showtime Virginia Tichenor Ragtime Band Virginia Tichenor Ragtime Band The Entertainer One of the Bay Area’s great ragtime pianists will be performing with her band. She is really wonderful. NO Cover Charge

Verdi Club 2424 Mariposa St, San Francisco 9 PM-1 PM Showtime Swing Fever Denise Perrier Swing Fever & Denise Perrier Honeysuckle Rose This will be fun show with the Bay Area’s premier Jazz Band and one of our great Jazz vocalists. $10 Cover Charge

In the North Bay

The Big Easy 128 American Alley, Petaluma 7PM-10PM Showtime Dylan Hayes Big Band Dylan Hayes Big Band Sus-pect This is one of the best up and coming Jazz bands on the west coast. I really like his original compositions as well as his arrangements of standards. His style and arrangements are reminiscent of Bob Florence’s work which is a good thing. No Cover

Wednesday December 27th

Bird and Beckett 653 Chenery St, San Francisco 7:30-9:30 showtime Vince Lateano Vince on drums with Dick Whittington A Felicidade Vince is one of the great historic Jazz drummers performing and recording over the years with the like of Cal Tjader Woody Herman, Vince Guaraldi, Tania Maria and Stan Getz to name a few. He will be performing with a quartet that includes Peck Allmond, Kieth Saunders and John Wiltala. This is a great venue to see this all star group perform $20 Cover Charge

Hemlock Tavern 1131 Polk St, San Francisco 8:30 PM-11:55 PM Showtime The Lamps The Lamps Band On The Run Milk For The Angry Milk For The Angry Like Lemonade Miracle Me Miracle Me Miss Me I’m Gone I really like the Lamps. They blend in indie surf blues jazz into their work. Do not know much about the other two bands but they sound good. $7 Cover Charge

Mr. Tipple’s 39 Fell St, San Francisco 7 PM and 10 PM Showtime Midnight Moods Midnight Moods Summertime Really nice tasteful Jazz trio. Jacqueline Corona is a really wonderful singer. No Cover Charge

Revolution Cafe 3248 22nd St, San Francisco 8:30 PM-11:30 PM Showtime 29th Street Swingtet 29th Street Swingtet Phoenix Revenge This is a highly talented and youthful gypsy jazz/ swing/world group. They are a lot of fun. No Cover Charge

Yoshis 510 Embarcadero West, Oakland 8 PM Showtime Larry Vuckovich Sextet Larry Vuckovich Sextet at Monterey Jazz Festival Internationally acclaimed Jazz piano master Larry Vuckovich has put together an All Star group performing the music of Miles, the sextet will be performing compositions of John Coltrane, Horace Silver, Joe Henderson, Kenny Dorham, Dexter Gordon, Sonny Clark, Grant Green, Lee Morgan. $21 Cover Charge

Bottom Of The Hill 1233 17th St, San Francisco 8:30 PM Showtime Village Idiots Village Idiots Still Into You Pleasure Parade Pleasure Parade Round and Round Dead Ringer Dead Ringer Already Gone Three really good bands on this bill. A great night of hardcore rock and roll. $12 Cover Charge

The Cigar Bar 850 Montgomery St, San Francisco 8 PM Showtime French American Quartet This is a wonderful Django Reinhardt/Stephane Grappelli inspired ensemble led by master guitarist Steve Froberg along with Hanna Mingano on violin, Fabrice Urrizalqui on drums, François Egron on bass. Highly recommended. No Cover Charge

SF Jazz 201 Franklin St San Francisco 7:30 PM Showtime Maceo Parker Maceo Parker Make It Funky Maceo is one of the masters, pioneers and one of the most influential funk and soul jazz saxophonists, best known for his work with James Brown in the 1960s, as well as Parliament-Funkadelic in the 1970s. Biscuits and Blues 401 Mason St San Francisco 7:30 PM & 10 PM Showtimes The Soul Soldiers The Soul Soldiers Man On Fire Former lead vocalist for Santana for 25 years Tony Lindsay leads an all star group of soulful musicians that includes f Fred Ross (who has recorded and toured with Aretha Franklin, Tower of Power, Frankie Beverly and Chaka Khan) and Will Russ Jr (a Detroit born,bred and raised singer with a voice as soothing as a cool summer breeze.) $24 Cover Charge

Pier 23 Pier 23 The Embarcadero, San Francisco 7pm-10PM Showtime S. E. Willis</a S.E. Willis and Friends Past Tense S.E.Willis leads a great boogie woogie rockin band. He is such a wonderful pianist and his band really rocks. Highly recommended. No Cover Charge

Sheba Piano Lounge 1419 Fillmore St, San Francisco 9 PM Showtime Charles Unger Experience Charles Unger Experience Summertime Charles is a favorite of mine. This is a soulful jazz inspired ensemble. Highly recommended No Cover Charge

The Chapel 777 Valencia St, San Francisco 9 PM Showtime Chuck Prophet and the Mission Express Chuck Prophet and the Mission Express HSB 2017 The Waiting This is a great rock and roll ensemble. Chuck and the Mission Express are amazing performers, I have seen them a lot and have never been disappointed. The Chapel is a great venue to see them. Highly recommended!! $28 Cover Charge

UC Theatre 2036 University Ave, Berkeley 8 PM Showtime Leftover Salmon Leftover Salmon Walls of Time The Infamous Stringdusters The Infamous Stringdusters Sitting on Top of the World This is a great double bill. Should be a great night bluegrass, rock blues and folk by two iconic bands. $32 Cover Charge

Mystic Theatre 23 Petaluma Blvd N, Petaluma 8:30 Showtime The Brothers Comotose The Brothers Comotose Pie For Breakfast The Brothers Comatose have been forging their own path with raucous West Coast renderings of traditional bluegrass, country and rock ‘n’ roll music. The five-piece string band is anything but a traditional acoustic outfit with their fierce musicianship and rowdy live shows reminiscent of stadium rock concerts. combinations of musicians on a large scale, while creating various textures musically together. This should be a great show lead by a great drummer and musician. $20 cover Charge

The Midway 900 Marin St, San Francisco 8 PM Showtime Beats AntiqueBeats Antiques Egyptic Clozee Clozee New Perspective Tsuruda Tsuruda Plastic Bounce Alex Grey & Allyson Grey Alex & Allyson Grey Holorfractal Psychedelic Experience Beats Antique is such a unique hybrid of visual and sound. I love their ability to blend so many different kinds of music in to an incredibly vibrant, distinctive and peerless album is what this band has been doing for the past ten years. Do not know much about Clozee but her music is quite visual. Thomas Tsuruda is a favorite bassist of mine. His music is diverse, elegant, and complex. Disregarding all genres, he isn’t afraid to push the boundaries of electronic bass and hip hop music. Alex and Allyson Grey round out what should a great evening of music visuals and sound. $20-$50-$77 Cover Charge Range

Chuck and the Mission Express are amazing performers, I have seen them a lot and have never been disappointed. The Hopmonk is a great venue to see them. Highly recommended!! $20 Cover Charge

The Freight and Salvage 2020 Addison St, Berkeley 9 PM Showtime Pete Escovedo Pete Escovedo & Sheila E Live The Freight and Salvage rings in the new year with The Pete Escovedo Orchestra featuring Peter Michael Escovedo and Juan Escovedo. A groundbreaking percussionist and beloved bandleader, Pete has been making great music and pushing the boundaries of Latin jazz for forty years. $80 Cover Charge

Great American Music Hall 859 O’Farrell St, San Francisco 9 PM Showtime Camper Van Beethoven Camper Van Beethovan Take The Skinheads Bowling The amazingly wonderful Camper Van Beethovan will be ringing in the New Year At the GAM. I always love the way they mix elements of pop, ska, punk rock, folk, alternative country, and world music. Another favorite of mine. $55 Cover Charge

Hotel Utah 500 4th St, San Francisco 8 PM Showtime Green Jelly Green Jelly Three Little Pigs Live Disciples of Icarus Disciples of Icarus Mastermind Green Jelly is so much fun, They personify comedy, absurdity with rock n roll. Great venue to see them perform. I like what I have heard from the Disciples of Icarus. Don’t know much about the opening bands Kind Fall & Space Toilet. I like their names. $25 Cover Charge.

UC Theatre 2036 University Ave, Berkeley 8 PM Showtime California Honeydrops California Honeydrops When It Was Wrong There is always a party when the California Honeydrops are performing. I love the way they blend R&B, Funk, Southern Soul, Delta Blues aNew Orleans Second Line into one of the most fun bands around.. Ican’t think of a better way to bring in the New Year than with the Honeydrops. $35 Cover Charge

Young@Heart Young@Heart Trailer Young@Heart, is a documentary on a chorus of senior citizens from Massachusetts who cover songs by Jimi Hendrix, Coldplay, Sonic Youth, and other unexpected musicians. It a a very funny and warm hearted film.
