Monday October 22

Club Deluxe 1511 Haight St, San Francisco 6:00 PM-9:00 PM Showtime… The High Tide Trio is a sensational super instrumental band featuring Mitch Polzak on guitar and bass, Hank Maninger on guitar and bass, and Les James on drums. Les will not be playing guitar. Hank and Mitch will switch off on guitar and bass. Mitch and Hank will not be playing the drums. The band plays all sorts of interesting guitar instrumentals, including surf, country, jazz, bluegrass, and movie and TV show themes. Highly recommended!!!! N/C

Club Deluxe 1511 Haight St, San Francisco 9:30 PM-12:30 AM Showtime Mike Olmos Presents The Sessions. Mike is a such a great trumpet player. He leads his all star Sessions for a great night of jazz.. N/C

Mr.Tipples 39 Fell St, San Francisco 7:00 PM-10:00 PM Showtime.. Le Hot Jazz.. The spirit of Django is alive and well in San Francisco. This is a great ensemble. Highly recommended!! N/C

Amnesia Bar 853 Valencia St, San Francisco 9:00 PM-11:30 PM Showtime.. The Earl Brothers are back. The bad boys of bluegrass, are irreverent energetic and a hell of a lot of fun. Highly recommended N/C

The Fillmore 1805 Geary Blvd, San Francisco 8:00 PM Showtime.. Thirty years ago Edie Brickell & New Bohemians exploded out of Dallas and became an international sensation with their double-platinum debut album, Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars, featuring the Top Ten hit, “What I Am.” The follow-up, 1990’s Ghost of a Dog, came quickly, but the NewBos didn’t put out an album until Stranger Things in 2006. Now, the group returns with Rocket, their first new music in a dozen years—and as the title indicates, they remain a propulsive and unclassifiable force, a whirlwind of musical ideas and styles. Bar Fluxus 18 Harlan Pl, San Francisco 9:00 PM-1:30 AM Showtime. Vibrason .. I saw this band recently. They are another great band out of the Bay Area. Very reminiscent of some of the Cal Tjader bands. Highly recommended.. $10 Cover Charge.

Le Colonial 20 Cosmo Pl, San Francisco 7:00 PM-10:00 PM Showtime. Le Hot Jazz.. The spirit of Django is alive and well in San Francisco. This is a great ensemble. Highly recommended!! N/C

The 2018 Brubeck Jazz Festival begins today and runs through Saturday at the Brubeck Institute at the University of Pacific.. The festival celebrates the legacy of jazz icon and renowned University alumnus Dave Brubeck. This year marks the 60th anniversary of Brubeck’s Jazz Diplomacy Tour of 1958. Tupelo 1337 Grant Ave, San Francisco 9:00 PM-1:00 AM Showtime.. If you don’t know Johnny Z and the Camaros you should. They are such a fun rock and roll band. They will have Tupelo rockin’ out. N/C

Biscuits and Blues 401 Mason St, San Francisco 7:30 PM & 9:30 PM Showtimes.. Bay City Blues featuring Chris Cain is a weekly showcase of world class Blues music and superb instrumental talent. This event is a celebration of the Blues in all its forms and an adventure into the depth of a national genre. Hosted by the nationally recognized Chris Cain & his All-Star cast of Musicians, every week they invite a new special guest to accompany them on stage and present new, upcoming, & old talent from the blues world! Club Deluxe 1511 Haight St, San Francisco 9:30 PM-12:30 AM Showtime. The Patrick Wolff Bebop Quartet is deeply rooted in the bebop tradition established by Bird, Clifford Jordan and Dexter Gordon. Patrick is absolutely my favorite Bay Area tenor player and he leads an outstanding group of musicians..N/C.

Cigar Bar & Grill 850 Montgomery St, San Francisco 8:00 PM Showtime.. French American Quartet is an ensemble I really like. This group plays a mix of django inspired gypsy jazz along with american standards. I really like their arrangements of Cole Porter standards. N/C

Le Colonial 20 Cosmo Pl, San Francisco 7:00 PM-10:00 PM Showtime. Robert Dehlinger & The Alpha Rhythm Kings influences range from vintage lounge music, 1940s R&B, swing, and boogie-woogie. This is a swinging fun band led by Robert’s vocals and superb trumpet playing. Highly recommended!!! N/C

Cats Corner 2174 Market St, San Francisco 9:30 PM-Midnight. Clint Baker’s Hot Five is the bay Area’s premier traditional jazz ensemble. This is one hot band who will have the Corner swingin’. Highly recommended!!! $10 cover Charge..

Impulse Room 1501 N Broadway #138, Walnut Creek 8:00 PM Showtime. The Mega Improv Jam returns with Ben Misterka on guitar, Simon Russell on keyboards, Sonny Fairley on sax/flute, on Erico Onpharebouk bass and Mark Edgar on drums. Should be a great show with some of the best musicians in the Bay Area. Highly recommended!! $18 Cover Charge..

Biscuits and Blues 401 Mason St, San Francisco 7:30 PM & 9:30 PM Showtimes.. The Laurie Morvan Band is a 5 piece high energy, rockin’ blues band lead by its fiery female lead guitarist vocalist. Laurie is one hell of a great guitarist with all the soulfulness of Bonnie Raitt and the swaggering, muscular guitar tone of Stevie Ray Vaughan. Highly recommended!!!$20 Cover Charge..

Bottom of the Hill 1233 17th St, San Francisco 9:00 PM Showtime. A fun night of music with a great indie pop band hailing from Houston, Texas Wild Moccasins headlining the night. Indie pop rockers Reisender and the surf punk/garage rockers The Gooms rounding out the show.. Highly recommended!!! $14 Cover Charge..

Swedish American Hall 2174 Market St, San Francisco 7:00 PM Showtime.. La Luz is a four piece band known for their “surf noir” style with layered vocal harmonies. Their energetic live shows often include Soul Traininspired dance contests and crowd surfing. I really like what I have heard from them. Highly recommended!!! $18 Cover Charge.

Atlas Cafe 3049 20th Street, San Francisco 8:00 Pm-10:00 PM Showtime.. The Gil Cohen Trio is a really wonderful jazz trio. When I first heard Gil playing he reminded me a lot of Roy Eldridge’s sound. It turns that Roy was one of his major influences. Gil and his trio is definitely worth checking out. Highly recommended!!! N/C

Tupelo 1337 Grant Ave, San Francisco 9:00 PM-1:00 AM Showtime.. Somewhere between Joan Jett and Bonnie Raitt lies GG Amos. This is one badass chick with one badass band. This is one of my very favorite local blues band. Highly recommended!! N/C

The Freight & Salvage 2020 Addison St, Berkeley 8:00 PM Showtime. The Subdudes are one of the great American roots rock groups. This New Orleans legendary group’s music blends folk, swamp pop, New Orleans rhythm and blues, Louisiana blues, country, cajun/zydeco, funk, soul and gospel with harmonic vocals. The Fox Theatre 1807 Telegraph Ave, Oakland 8:00 PM Showtime.. Jazz Master Pat Metheny is a force of nature. The dazzling guitarist with an unmistakable sound is known for his broad and expressive range across a variety of guitars, from Gibson “archtop” and nylon-string to guitar synthesizer and the unique 42-string Pikasso. The Black Cat Jazz Club 400 Eddy St, San Francisco 6:30 PM-9:30 PM Showtime.. singer/songwriter Lilan Kane is one of the Bay Areas very best soulful r&b/funk/pop & jazz vocalists. Lilan and her band has opened for Hall & Oates, Sharon Jones and Trombone Shorty. She is a great performer. Highly recommended!!! $20 Cover Charge..

Club Deluxe 1511 Haight St, San Francisco 6:00 PM-9:00 PM Showtime.. Nashville Honeymoon is another Bay Area band I really love. Their music is a modern reworking of the classic country sounds of the 50s and 60s. Their songwriting draws on country, rockabilly, and honky-tonk traditions. Highly recommended!!! N/C

Club Deluxe 1511 Haight St, San Francisco 10:00 PM-1:00 AM Showtime.. Portland based Tumbledown House, a self described modern speakeasy, saloon jazz, parlor pop and Tom Waits in a cocktail dress ensemble. I really like what I have seen on youtube and look forward to seeing them this evening. Highly recommended!! N/C

Willie Dixon first took notice of Billy Branch while Billy was still in college and began touring with Willie Dixon’s Chicago All-Stars. This gave Billy the unique opportunity to travel and work as an under study for the legendary Carey Bell who was planning to leave the All-Stars and form his own band. When Carey took his leave, the young Billy Branch took his place, touring with Willie Dixon for six years.. Billy has played on over 100 different recordings, including 12 under his own name. He’s recorded with Willie Dixon, Johnny Winter, Lou Rawls, Koko Taylor, Eddy Clearwater, Honeyboy Edwards, Lurrie Bell, Ronnie Baker Brooks, and Taj Mahal. He has received two Grammy nominations (his most recent loss was to BB King and Eric Clapton. This promises to be a memorable night of music.. Highly recommended!! $35 Cover Charge..

Named after the title of its second album, Circuit Rider features the trio’s founder, cornetist Ron Miles, guitarist Bill Frisell, and drummer Brian Blade. Revolution Cafe 3248 22nd St, San Francisco 5:00 PM-8:00 PM Showtime..Westside Jazz Club , lead by the wonderful tenor saxophonist Scott Silverberg, is a collective of innovative jazz musicians performing jazz standards, challenging modern compositions and freshly-updated classics. I have seen this ensemble a number of time and they never dissapoint.. Highly recommended!!! N/C

Club Deluxe 1511 Haight St, San Francisco 10:00 PM-1:00 AM Showtime. Mitch Polzak and The Royal Dueces are unquestionably one of the great rockabilly bands around. The high-energy three piece ensemble performs Rockabilly from the late ’50s Sun Records era, guitar instrumentals from influences such as Joe Maphis, Merle Travis, and Chet Atkins, to a wide a range of Bakersfield Honky Tonk and Truck Driving music. Mitch also adds the 5 String Banjo to the show, bringing in the influence of Earl Scruggs and Ralph Stanley. Les James on drums and Hank Maninger on bass round out the lineup. Highly recommended!! Bottom of the Hill 1233 17th St, San Francisco 9:00 PM Showtime. Time to get your funk out tonight with two really fun bands. The Youngblood Brass Band is putting their stamp on a unique brass sound combining Jazz, Hip hop music, Punk rock, Punk jazz. Opening the show is the rock, funk & jazz group Vinyl Spectrum. Both bands are raucous and really fun. Highly recommended!!!!!$25 Cover Charge..

The Fox Theatre 1807 Telegraph Ave, Oakland 8:00 PM Showtime.. The Devil Makes Three is one of the great American bands performing today. The group blends bluegrass, old time, country, folk, blues, jazz, and ragtime music. The group’s members are guitarist Pete Bernhard, upright bassist Lucia Turino, and guitarist and tenor banjo player Cooper McBean. Highly recommended!!!! $29.59 Cover Charge..

The Freight & Salvage 2020 Addison Street Berkeley 8:00 PM Showtime.. Tommy Castro & The Painkillers are an inspiring funky/soulful bandplaying a blend of high-energy blues, R&B and roadhouse rock…soulful, celebratory vocals and exquisite, stellar guitar. Highly recommended!!!$34 cover Charge..

The 2018 Brubeck Jazz Festival concludes this evening at the Brubeck Institute at the University of Pacific.. The festival celebrates the legacy of jazz icon and renowned University alumnus Dave Brubeck. This year marks the 60th anniversary of Brubeck’s Jazz Diplomacy Tour of 1958. The festival concludes with the Grammy award winning Spanish Harlem Orchestra performing from 7:30 PM at the Derosa University Center located on campus at the University of Pacific. $25 Cover Charge.

Sunday October 28

The Lucky Horseshoe Bar 453 Cortland Ave, San Francisco 4:00 PM-7:00 PM Showtime..Bernal Hillbillies.. A great three hours of bluegrass music at a really great venue reminiscent of the jams at the Old Paul Saloon many years ago. N/C

The Chapel 777 Valencia St, San Francisco.. 3:00 PM Showtime.. A fun afternoon of great music with the legendary Canadian rock and roll country and western band The Sadies headlining. One of the Bay Areas best country bands Red Meat and the fun cover band The Chuckleberries round out a great afternoon of music.. Highly recommended!!!! $20 Cover Charge..

Daniel Castro is the latest and one of the greatest blues guitarists to come bursting out of the highly competitive West Coast scene. To the classic music of B.B. King, Albert King, and Albert Collins he has added the three T’s, taste, tone, and technique. His raw passion warms your soul while his deep groove kicks your butt on fine, fresh originals and well chosen covers.. Highly recommended!!! $20 Cover Charge..

Wake The Dead spreads their reach to embrace the entire Summer of Love, keeping it alive for Deadheads and Celtoids alike as only they can. The Hopmonk Tavern 224 Vintage Way, Novato 5:00 PM Showtime.. Hot Buttered Rum is one of the great and influential progressive bluegrass bands. I Iove that the band has kept its bluegrass roots while incorporating the progressiveness of bands like Strength In Numbers and The New Grass Revival and the looseness of a jam band like Phish. Highly recommended!!! $20 Cover Charge..

The Sweetwater Music Hall 19 Corte Madera Ave, Mill Valley 8:00 PM Showtime.. Bernard Purdie‘s Birthday Party.. Now 78, Bernard has chosen to celebrate his legacy and future as the Guest Of Honor at Bernard Purdie’s Party, a celebration of some of Bernard’s most notable and lasting contributions to the worlds of Rock, Funk, R&B, Pop and Jazz. Bernard will be joined by a collection of world-class artists eager to kick out the jams with the one and only Bernard “Pretty” Purdie in the best way possible, including a very special tribute to his musical companion and friend Aretha Franklin. The Winding Stream tells the story of the American roots music dynasty, the Carters and the Cashes.  Starting with the seminal Original Carter Family, A.P., Sara and Maybelle; this film-in-progress traces the ebb and flow of their influence, the transformation of that act into the Carter Sisters and Mother Maybelle, the marital alliance between June Carter and music legend Johnny Cash, and the efforts of the present-day family to keep this legacy alive.
