The High Tide Trio is a sensational super instrumental band featuring Mitch Polzak on guitar and bass, Hank Maninger on guitar and bass, and Les James on drums. Les will not be playing guitar. Hank and Mitch will switch off on guitar and bass. Mitch and Hank will not be playing the drums. The band plays all sorts of interesting guitar instrumentals, including surf, country, jazz, bluegrass, and movie and TV show themes. Highly recommended!!!! N/C

Marcia Ball has been a personnel favorite of mine since I first saw her more than 30 years ago. Marcia is rollicking, playful and a good-time playing two-fisted New Orleans barrelhouse piano and singing in a husky voice about all the trouble men and women can get into on the way to a good time. One of the Bay Area’s best jazz groups , the popular Al Molina Jazz Sextet is playing tonight led by Al Molina on trumpet with Al Bent on trombone, Tod Dickow on sax, Larry Chin on piano, Peter Barshay on bass and the great Vince Lateano on drums. This is a great ensemble playing music by Chick Corea, Woody Herman, Horace Silver, Duke Ellington, Monk, Miles and even Blue Mitchell. Highly recommended!!!!!! No cover Charge..

Bar Fluxus 18 Harlan Pl, San Francisco 9:00 PM-1:30 AM Showtime. Vibrason is another great band out of the Bay Area very reminiscent of some of the Cal Tjader bands. Highly recommended $10 Cover Charge.

Local Edition 691 Market St, San Francisco 8:00 PM-Midnight Showtime.. Cosmo Alleycats is one of my favorite Bay Are jazz ensembles. The Alleycats are so good and so much fun and one of the better jazz bands in the Bay Area. Highly recommended. N/C

Le Colonial 20 Cosmo Pl, San Francisco 8:00 PM-11:00 PM Showtime. Cosmo Alleycats is one of my favorite Bay Are jazz ensembles. The Alleycats are so good and so much fun and one of the better jazz bands in the Bay Area. Highly recommended. N/C

Cornerstone Craft Beer & Live Music 2367 Shattuck Ave, Berkeley 8:30 PM Showtime… A really wonderful night of Americana music featuring the Lost Dog Street Band who has crafted a distinct sound that is best described as ‘dark country’ that never wavers from its roots and honors the traditions of its forbearers. In the same vein as country-legend Guy Clark, Benjamin Tod weaves his melodies and lyrics together to offer listeners an unapologetically raw and authentic account of the human experience. Opening up the show is a great Carolina Appalachia style fiddler Matt Heckler. Highly recommended!!!! $14 Cover Charge..

Yoshis 510 Embarcadero West, Oakland 8:00 PM Showtime…. One of the great jazz pianists of the past 50 years Monty Alexander will be making a rare Bay Area appearance.. His playing has a Caribbean influence and bright swinging feeling, with a strong vocabulary of bebop jazz and blues rooted melodies. His spirited conception is one informed by the timeless verities: endless melody-making, effervescent grooves, sophisticated voicing, a romantic spirit, and a consistent predisposition, as Alexander accurately states, “to build up the heat and kick up a storm.” Highly recommended!!!!! $29-$64 Cover Charge..

People in Plazas is free noontime musical concert series in San Francisco public spaces. This is a great summer music series with over 120 free performances at lunchtime in a number of downtown public plazas Monday through Friday in July, August and September. Today’s noontime concert series lineup includes Robert Dehlinger & The Alpha Rhythm Kings is a swinging fun band led by Robert’s vocals and superb trumpet playing. This is a great band performing at 101 California Street; Blind Lemon Pledge aka Bay Area bluesman James Byfield, playing a wide range of his musical styles including blues, rock, jazz and folk performing at Ricon Center located at 405 Howard Street; The dynamic queen of Bay Area jazz & blues Miss Faye Carol will perform at 525 Market Street; Lulu & The Rent Party is one of my favorite bay Area bands playing an eclectic selection of jazz, latin, and pop tunes and performing at 555 California Street.

Thursday August 8th

SF Jazz Joe Henderson Lab 201 Franklin St, San Francisco 3:00 PM Showtime. One of the brightest young talents in the Big Easy, New Orleans-born vocalist Sasha Masakowski has a marvelous voice that can be sly, sexy, exotic and arresting as she works her way through an incredibly diverse array of music that crosses cultural and stylistic lines in interesting ways. I really love her new album “Art Market” which balances the spirit of the second line with the city’s infectious bounce music culture and angular modern jazz, bound by her sweetly ethereal vocals. Rickshaw Stop 155 Fell Street, San Francisco 9:30 PM Showtime.. Cherry Glazerr is one of the best American rock bands to come out of Los Angeles in the last few years. The band’s sound has transitioned from lo-fi, garage-rock in their debut release Haxel Princessin 2014, to a more polished rock sound, with elements of grunge, punk and new wave, in their subsequent releases Apocalipstick and Stuffed & Ready. Westside Jazz Club, lead by the wonderful tenor saxophonist Scott Silverberg, is a collective of innovative jazz musicians performing jazz standards, challenging modern compositions and freshly-updated classics. I have seen this ensemble a number of time and they never disappoint.. Highly recommended!!! N/C

Club Deluxe 1511 Haight St, San Francisco 10:00 PM-1:00 AM Showtime.. Howell Devine is the massively talented NorCal trio featuring Joshua Howell (Vocals, Guitar, Harmonica)Pete Devine (Drums & Washboard) and Joe Kyle Jr. (Upright Bass). HowellDevine breaks from the norm, providing rich and complex textures integral to the music rather than simple backing for a soloist. The result is a sound which stands in stark contrast to the typical blues heard in bars these days and would more likely be shaking the floors of a Southern juke joint some 70 years ago. Hannah Wicklund & The Steppin Stones is one of the best raw, young talented blues rock bands to come along in a while. Hanna is a monster guitar player, and has a great raw bluesy singing voice. The band has been billed alongside legacy acts such as Jefferson Starship, Kansas and The Marshall Tucker Band. Opening up for Hanna and the band is Think No Think is a noisy and powerful three piece rock band, from Austin,TX. With leader John Dowey on Vocals and Guitar, Nick Bakke on Drums, and Lee Adams on Bass, they are voluminous, menacing, and beautiful, all at once.

Ivy Room 860 San Pablo Ave, Albany 9:00 PM Showtime.. For over 25 years, the trio the Broun Fellinis have been innovating and disseminating their “Brounsoun”, a sonic expression inspired by the ancient to future traditions of Jazz, Rock, Funk, Hardcore, Afrocentric Hip hop, Dub, film music and African/Indian trance sounds. Opening up the set is VooDoo Dolly which is an all Black futurist tribute to the mid 70’s English rock band Siouxsie & The Banshees.. Highly recommended!!! $15 Cover Charge..

Mountain Winery Concert Series 14831 Pierce Rd, Saratoga 6:30 PM Showtime.. Two of the most influential Americana multi ethnic latin infused bands are performing tonight. Los Lobos is one of the most acclaimed American bands. Calling themselves “just another band from East L.A.” they have won over critics and a legion of loyal fans with their bracing mixture of rock, blues, Tex-Mex, country, R&B, and Mexican folk sounds, with the band’s sound ranging from gentle acoustic ballads to the outer limits of experimental rock. Their eclectic sound is what defined them as a vital example of America’s cultural melting pot. Los Lonely Boys the American Chicano rock power trio play a style of music they call “Texican Rock n’ Roll,” combining elements of rock and roll, Texas blues, brown-eyed soul, country, and Tejano. The 82nd Annual Stern Grove Festival The free summer outdoor Sunday music fest continues with Pink Martini, an eclectic genre-defying international cocktail of jazz, swing, world music, cabaret, chanson, and more featuring the incomparable vocalist China Forbes .. Opening up the show is Barrio Manouche a great Bay Area ensemble performing a repertoire of original instrumental compositions with a unique sound that it’s difficult to classify but instantly recognizable deeply influenced by a range of musical traditions, from the swing of Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet, to the hot jazz of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli, the gypsy soul of eastern Europe, the flamenco of Paco de Lucía to the avant-garde sounds of Miles Davis, Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane… The music starts at 2:00 PM and is located at 19th Avenue and Sloat Blvd in San Francisco.

The Hot Baked Goods are a band of young jazz musicians playing hot tunes of the 30’s. Most of the band members started as swing dancers, and became so infatuated with the music that they decided to make some themselves. I saw them at the Amnesia and this band really swings. N/C

With Paul Simon headlining this week’s Outside Lands Festival I want to recommend the Simon documentary Under African Skies which chronicles the genesis of Paul Simon’s Graceland album, features original recording session footage as well as his 2011 visit to South Africa for a 25th-anniversary concert.
