Monday January 13th

Club Deluxe 1511 Haight St, San Francisco 6:00 PM-9:00 PM Showtime… The High Tide Trio is a sensational super instrumental band featuring Mitch Polzak on guitar and bass, Hank Maninger on guitar and bass, and Les James on drums. Les will not be playing guitar. Hank and Mitch will switch off on guitar and bass. Mitch and Hank will not be playing the drums. The band plays all sorts of interesting guitar instrumentals, including surf, country, jazz, bluegrass, and movie and TV show themes. Highly recommended!!!! N/C

The Patrick Wolff Bebop Quartet is deeply rooted in the bebop tradition established by Bird, Clifford Jordan and Dexter Gordon. Patrick is absolutely my favorite Bay Area tenor player and he leads an outstanding group of musicians..N/C.

The Lucky Horseshoe Bar 453 Cortland Ave, San Francisco 8 PM-Midnight Showtime. Ed Ivey’s Weekly Blues Jam gets the bar rocking. His weekly jam is really fun. N/C

Steve Lucky & The Rhumba Bums is one of the fun bands in the Bay Area performing vintage jazz, pounding boogie-woogies, sultry ballads, and funky-swinging New Orleans R&B. Tonight they focus on giving you the beat to move your feet. Highly recommended!! No Cover Charge…

Tupelo 1337 Grant Ave, San Francisco 9:00 PM-1:00 AM Showtime.. If you don’t know Johnny Z and the Camaros you should. They are such a fun rock and roll band. They will have Tupelo rockin’ out. N/C..

The Midnight Moods are one of the Bay Areas best kept secrets. This is a wonderful classic jazz trio led the amazing Jacqueline Corona on vocals with Alex Farrell on bass and Julian Shipp on piano. Highly recommended!! N/C

Stanford Bing Concert Hall 327 Lasuen St, Stanford 7:30 PM Showtime.Kronos Quartet presents the 60’s, The Years That Changed America, a concert dedicated to Mahalia Jackson’s shout to her close friend Rev. Thursday January 16th

Club Deluxe 1511 Haight St, San Francisco 9:30 PM-12:30 PM Showtime. Junk Parlor’s influences range from Louis Armstrong, Charlie Christian and Django Reinhardt to Fats Domino, Howling Wolf and Elvis. This is one of the best and most creative Bay Area bands. Highly recommended!! N/C.

Jazz Mafia Heaviest Feather is their newest band paying tribute to the classic women of hip-hop, from Lauryn Hill and Missy Elliot to Lil Kim and Eve, with this evening of high-energy originals and re-imagined cover songs with special guests including the best female MCs in the Bay Area. In this pairing, guitarist Terrance Brewer and vocalist Pamela Rose lovingly rejoice in the vocal/guitar duo work of Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass. Milk Bar 1840 Haight Street San Francisco, CA 9:00 PM Showtime.. A fun night of music in store with headliners Stymie & The Pimp Jones Luv Orchestra playing classic funk groups like Funkadelic and Sly and The Family Stone, yet the music is 100% original, blending all the musical influences, modern cultural craziness, and cartoon humor. Red Poppy Art House 2698 Folsom St, San Francisco 7:30 PM-10:00 PM ShowtimeGrupo Falso Baiano is a choro group that offers a window into the history and diverse culture of Brazil. Choro is one of Brazil’s earliest popular music genres, dating back to the late 1800s, and, similar to jazz, it reflects the melding of African rhythms with a melodic and harmonic structure closely resembling Baroque Classical music. The group features Brian Moran on 7-string guitar, mandolin, Zack Pitt-Smith on reeds, Ami Molinelli on percussion and special guest Julio Lemos on 7-string guitar. The Independant 628 Divisadero St, San Francisco 8:00 PM Showtime. Oakland based rock n’ rollers Whiskerman at times sounds like a gospel and soul band that can make you feel like raising your hands in the air in praise of its talent. They are fun and exuberant. Opening up the show are the eclectic folk trio Rainbow Girls and the San Francisco folk duo The Feelings Parade. Highly recommended!!!! $20 Cover Charge…

Brick & Mortar Music Hall 1710 Mission St, San Francisco 9:00 PM Showtime. Headlining is the Sacramento based rock/blues power trio the Zach Waters Band. Also on the bill are Austin based Cowboy Diplomacy is a four piece alternative rock and blues group and East Bay based Panoram is an energetic psychedelic, pop-synth rock band. Juan de Marcos & The Afro-Cuban All Stars are gaining international fame for reviving classic Cuban music, tres master Juan de Marcos has turned the Afro-Cuban All Stars into a sensational showcase for Cuba’s most prodigious young musicians. Long revered as a founding member of Cuba’s great revival band Sierra Maestra, de Marcos is perhaps best known as founder of the Buena Vista Jazz Club. This should be a great show. The UC Theatre 2036 University Ave, Berkeley 8:00 PM Showtime. Brazilian singer-songwriter/actor Seu Jorge music integrates stylings of reggae, pop, electronic, and jazz into his own music and is credited with reinvigorating Brazil’s modern samba scene. Joining Seu Jorge is Brazilian guitarist Roge.

In honor of what would have been his 79th birthday this week I highly recommend The Artist Formerly Known as Captain Beefheart, a documentary traces the roots and history of this iconic musical legend. Featuring rare live and studio performances of Beefheart, interspersed with contributions from virtually all members of The Magic Band – along with a panel of esteemed experts.
